All About The Canada Lottery 649 Game
The Canada Lotto 649, along with the new Lotto Max started in September last year, is one of Canada's national lotto games. In the Canada 649 lotto, six numbers are drawn from a set of 49, and the winning numbers are drawn every Saturday and Wednesday.
The Canadian lottery 649 was launched in June 1982, and was the first nation-wide lottery to let game players select their own numbers. Previous Canadian national games such as
Loto Canada,
the Olympic Lottery and Superloto used printed numbers on their tickets. When the Lotto 649 was introduced it made these types of lotteries obsolete.
In the 649 lotto, 6 numbers are drawn from a total set of 49. If a ticket matches all six numbers, the jackpot prize of at least $4 million is won. A bonus number is also drawn, and if a player's ticket matches 5 numbers and the extra bonus number, they win a 2nd prize - usually between $100,000-$500,000.
If more than one player wins the main or second prize, the money is split amongst them. Smaller prizes are also given if they match at least three numbers, or two numbers plus the bonus number.
The 649's largest jackpot is also a Canadian lotto record, and was drawn on 26th October, 2005. The winning ticket - worth $54.3 million - was the only ticket, It was purchased in Camrose, Alberta by a syndicated group of factory plant workers.
Like most lottery games, if the top prize is not won the jackpot amount accumulates and increases for the next draw. Tickets were raised to $2 a line from June 2004. Lines had previously been $1, but were raised to provide larger jackpots. The smallest Canada Lotto 649 jackpot prize amount was also raised from $2 million to $4 million.
